Is It Necessary To Hire a Forensic Cleaner After a Death in Australia?

Death is rarely expected, and when it happens, there is a lot to think about and do for those left behind. One thing people often don’t consider is whether forensic cleaning is required after the death of a loved one, especially in an unattended death

To understand whether a forensic cleanup is needed one must understand what happens to a body once an individual dies. The scenario surrounding the death will also determine if a forensic cleanup is needed.

A forensic cleanup will be necessary when:

  • The body has started decomposing, as in the case of an unattended death where the body has not been discovered for some time.
  • In the case of a homicide or suicide where there has been spillage of blood or other biological matter.

Decomposition is a major issue requiring professional accredited cleanup services. The more time passes until discovery, the more time the body has to decompose.

Decomposition involves 4 stages:

Autolysis: This is when oxygen stops travelling through the body and digestion stops. Rigour Mortis sets in and blisters will appear around the body.

Bloat: This is when the body swells up to double in size due to gases being produced from the lack of enzymes. The corpse will start attracting insects due to putrefaction (odours being released).

Active decay: This is a messy stage where soft tissue and organs begin to liquefy and can escape through the body’s orifices.

Skeletonisation: Usually a body would be discovered long before reaching this phase, but this is when the entire corpse’s organs and tissue have decayed.

Although not a pleasant thought, the above scenarios are realities in the everyday passing on of individuals and it is important to immediately call in a forensic cleaner should any of the above be applicable. They offer several benefits:

  • They have the psychological training and experience
  • The necessary equipment, resources and procedures
  • Experience in legal matters and liaising with the local authorities as required
