COVID Vessel Cleaning

One of the potential sources of community transmission of COVID-19 in Australia is vessels. This is because close confines help COVID-19 to spread. Therefore, there are strict laws in Australia to mitigate the risk of COVID spreading on vessels.

The strict laws include; onboard social distancing, isolation and quarantine, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning and disinfection, adequate medical staffing, onboard COVID-19 testing, and onboard monitoring for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and COVID-19 outbreak management. It is important to adhere to strict laws to maintain vessel operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What Can You Do If there Is a Positive COVID-19 Case on Vessel?

Once a positive COVID-19 case is identified on a vessel, the people on board the vessel are considered contacts. These findings need to be reported immediately to WA Health and or local authorities for further instruction.  You need to take the necessary precautions to reduce your chances of getting the virus. Here are some things you can do to stop the spread of the virus and keep away from getting the virus:

  • Do not share your personal items with other persons, including video games, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, blankets, etc.
  • Wear PPE when outside your cabin.
  • Maintain a distance of more than 2 metres from other persons and crew members. If you cannot maintain distance in narrow corridors, then allow other persons to pass before you enter.
  • Avoid physical contact with other persons, such as cheek kissing, giving hugs and shaking hands.
  • Do not touch your mouth, nose and eyes with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for more than 20 seconds.
  • If there is no soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
  • Report if you have symptoms, including fever, loss of taste, loss of smell, chills, night sweats, shortness of breath, tiredness, sore throat and cough.
  • Cough and sneeze into a clean tissue or your elbow and dispose of the tissue and use a hand sanitiser.

Why It Is Not Safe for Crew Members to Clean the Vessel?

One of the best practices for preventing COVID-19 transmission is to clean surfaces and disinfect these surfaces regularly. This is because the virus remains viable on surfaces for periods of time.

Therefore, the crew members need to maintain a high level of cleaning and disinfection during the pandemic. However, it is not safe for the crew members to clean the vessel since they may not have the necessary chemicals to disinfect the surfaces.

Additionally, most of the crew members are not properly trained, so they can catch the virus while cleaning the vessel. It is much better to hire a professional cleaning service to carry out the deep COVID cleaning.

Why Do You Need to Hire Professional Cleaners?

  • Firstly, professional cleaners are properly trained and accredited to conduct these services.
  • Secondly, professional cleaning services have effective chemicals. Therefore, they use these chemicals to disinfect the surfaces once they clean them.
  • Finally, they can reduce the spread of the virus. Crew members will not have to clean the vessel, so they will not catch the virus. They do not even have to meet and talk with professional cleaners. We can design a people movement plan to eliminate contact with vessel personnel.
